I've been reminiscing lately over the cakes and catering I did for several years, and how part of me misses that creative outlet, but another knows it's just not feasible at this point in my family's life. Plus, the past few months I've totally avoided making anything resembling buttercream icing, and turned down a few random requests for cakes, since the thought just sent my tummy churning. I have a couple to do this week, and the fact that they're easy and for dear friends, make me actually look forward to baking again.
I also recently had lunch with Sandi at Diane's restaurant. Since I did Diane's baking and icing making for nearly a year, being a part of her catering business for those months really gave me an appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into owning your own growing enterprise. After working for her, I knew I wanted to learn how to decorate cakes myself, so 12 weeks of classes really did train me well enough that I was able to supplement our family's income for years while James was in nursing school and beyond. The classes, plus the experience with Diane were invaluable to give me the confidence and knowledge to prepare receptions and cakes to serve, and please, hundreds of people.
Anyway, it's awesome to now see Diane doing so well with her cafe' and we were able to catch up a little Friday. I'm very proud for her success, and know that God's blessed her with a wonderful talent. I'm also grateful that He provided me with the opportunity and a supportive husband to try something that was new, and at times, quite daunting. Catering was nothing like teaching first grade, but I'm so glad I have those memories to look back on. Here are a few pictures for fun. I regret not having a digital camera then, since these were all scanned into my computer awhile back, and just aren't great quality. It's so neat to look back on just this sample of bazillions I did over 5 or so years, and think of the story there is behind each event. So many happy times that were celebrated in our lives, and friends'. It's really an honor to have been part of so many wonderful occasions. So, now, go have some cake!
Growing up, I often said "I wished I had a corner," meaning I wanted a little hideaway where I could get alone and just BE. It got to be kind of a joke in the family, but they understood what I meant - a spot just for me; to read, journal, garden, enjoy music, meditate on life, or pray. The "corner" I longed for wasn't even an actual place, but more, the opportunity to do those things I love. So, welcome and see what is going on in our family's corner!

Your cakes are beautiful! We must visit Diane's cafe next time I'm in town. ~C and I tried cake decorating classes but I only lasted through the first course. Those roses really got me!!
I know your pain...I share this struggle every day. The desire to do what we really enjoy, but the timeing is just not right. But one day you know you can always do this, besides it is soo much more fun when you do it for people you love! YOU are so much more talented in the area of decorating than me!
Fun times. I still wonder if God is going to use my strange extra money making venture into wedding flowers again. Maybe He will let us get together someday (sigh).
Tim would like to complain that you have taken your music player off. He listens to it at least twice a day and is feeling neglected. He says he has no other access to good, new music. He is so pathetic about it, it makes me laugh.
thanks for the e-mail. That is so funny. I DO love pioneer woman! I also want to take a bite out of your yummy cakes.
Graced,
Tell Tim thanks for noticing. I've now converted to the beta version of blogger and have the mp3 player back. Yippee!
