85 Years: Mamaw, part 2

My grandparents settled in Childersburg, then my parents did, so that became my hometown. I loved that we always lived just a few miles from each other as I grew up. I was blessed to be the first grandchild born to Mamaw and Papaw. I made her them grandparents! I was most likely spoiled by some standards, but it was a mutual admiration. I grew up with so many precious memories of visiting their home, having wonderful holiday celebrations there, and spending a whole lot of Friday nights and Saturdays with them.

Favorite times were spent making glorified brownies in that certain pan, snuggling next to Mamaw with a quilt watching TV downstairs in a chilly living room, and then running errands on Saturday with her. We would go get her hair done, while I talked it up with everyone in the beauty shop, and she would always give me a quarter to buy a glass bottle Grapico from the machine there. Then we would shop at Giant Foods, where I proceeded to pick out all kinds of junk food I wanted, and then we would go home to eat that delicious lunch.

Holidays were marked by a cheerfully decorated house and lots of candy and treat making. Though Mamaw was a diabetic, that didn't stop her from making many containers of goodies for others, and having an incredible spread of every confection you can imagine for Christmas for most of my life; Millionaires, Martha Washington balls, pecan tassies, buckeyes, haystacks, and so many more delicious things!

We loved celebrating Mamaw on July 4th
Easter was a huge deal. Egg hunts, baskets full of treats, fun desserts with lots of family and friends coming to share in the fun. I love how she invited folks who were family and those were just friends of family, and included folks of all ages, races, and backgrounds in her life. She LOVED people and she showed it.

Sweet memories, & the pictures were a perfect addition! She never liked having her picture made, but I'm thankful for the ones we got.

Jennifer, like you I was blessed to live near both sets of my grandparents and they made SUCH a difference in my life. I hope my grands will have sweet memories of me just like you have wonderful memories of your grandmother.
