(Yes, I'm posting a week late - that's what happens when 2 boys are pitiful for days with fever and congestion.)
Saturday was the famous Pinewood Derby car race for Cub Scouts, and so we spent the morning watching a bunch of wooden cars race over and over to determine who won the grand prize out of all the scouts in our pack. What is this incredible prize, you may ask? Well, it's a special neckerchief. Apparently, it's a BIG deal to scouts. I'm a bit perplexed at why exactly, but we didn't win the grand prize, so it's o.k. :-) Isaac's car did well, winning 3rd for his den, and Abigail got to race in the sibling/parent category, and she loved that, though she didn't place or anything. The time they spent with James working on their cars was very special and that was our main focus. They chose stickers, paint colors, and design for each, and worked hard to sand and prepare their cars. It was really a neat project and not too complicated.
Then on Sunday afternoon we gathered with our Nascar gang of friends to watch the first race of the season. Last year I was coerced, and bribed, to join the fans of a sport I've made fun of for decades. Being from Talladega County, where the famous racetrack is located, I've always considered the sport of Nascar to be one for rednecks only. However, since I realized I could spend more time with some of my favorite people in the world, last year I caved to the pressure, even joining a fantasy league we all participated in. And, humbly, I have to share that I blew them away in the year's competition, and won the title of Nascar Yahoo Fantasy League Queen for our little team. It was quite hilarious, since I had no idea who any racers were hardly, and knew nothing last year of any sponsor or car number. I'm slightly better educated now, but honestly, it's all about getting together occasionally to kinda watch the races, and mostly visit with friends. And, eat lots of yummy snacks. And, listen to the Jeff Gordon vs. Tony Stewart vs. Dale Jr. vs. Jimmie Johnson fans talk smack (in love, of course). And, eat lots of yummy snacks. I actually do know that Ryan Newman won at Daytona, by the way. I was paying a little attention.
Growing up, I often said "I wished I had a corner," meaning I wanted a little hideaway where I could get alone and just BE. It got to be kind of a joke in the family, but they understood what I meant - a spot just for me; to read, journal, garden, enjoy music, meditate on life, or pray. The "corner" I longed for wasn't even an actual place, but more, the opportunity to do those things I love. So, welcome and see what is going on in our family's corner!
